For the game lovers and Playstation fans, the waiting is over. The Playstation 3 is set for release. In Japan and the United States, the Playstation 3 will be launched on November 2006. On the other hand, gamers in the Australian and European areas shall have to wait until March 2007. Based on reports, the postponed release date is due to the scarcity of diodes used in the Blu-ray drives.

The Blu-ray drive is a key component of the Playstation 3. With it, PS3 owners can play games and movies. In addition, it can hold up to 54 GB of data. As such, the PS3 users would not have to look for extra media space.

According to statements of Sony, the Playstation 3 will be launched in two configurations: the Premium and the Basic. The Premium comes with a 60 GB upgradeable hard disk, Bluetooth SIXAXIS controllers, Silver-colored logo, Silver-colored trim, built-in Wi-Fi feature, and multiple memory card readers. Meanwhile, the Basic version has only a 20 GB upgradeable hard drive, Blu-ray drive, and controllers. Wi-Fi support and built-in memory card readers are not included. However, the user has the option to purchase adapters to enjoy the memory card reader support. Currently, the Wi-Fi cannot be added.

The retail price of the Playstation 3 is dependent on the region. In the US, the 20 GB PS3 will be sold for US$ 499, while the 60 GB model for US$ 599. In Japan, on the other hand, the Basic version will be retailed for JP¥ 49,980 or US$ 420. Sony has set an open pricing strategy for the 60 GB version in Japan. Meanwhile, in Canada, resellers have set the price of the 20 GB PS3 at C$ 549 or US$ 480, and C$ 659 or US$ 580 for the 60 GB models. In Australia, the PS3 will be available for A$ 829 or US$ 570 and A$ 999 or US$ 680 for the Basic and Premium units, respectively. In Mexico, gamers can have a 20 GB PS3 for MXN$ 7,999 or US$ 640 or a 60 GB one for MXN$ 9,499 or US$ 760. In the Eurozone, excluding Finland, the PS3 are resold for € 499 or US$ 550 (20 GB), and € 599 or US$ 660 (60 GB). In Finland, the 20 GB PS3 can be purchased for NTD$ 14,980 or US$ 451, and the 60 GB model for NTD$ 17,980 or US$ 542. In Taiwan, the price is fixed at NTD$ 14,980 or US$ 451 (Basic), and NTD$ 17,980 or US$ 542 (Premium). And in Hong Kong, the video game console will be retailed for HKD$ 3,180 ($409 US) for the 20 GB, and HKD$ 3,780 ($486 US) for the 60 GB.

The launch price of the PS3 is markedly expensive. Game analysts and developers have made their criticisms and reviews on this issue. On the other side, Sony explained that the high pricing of the Playstation 3 can be charged to the Blu-ray feature. But analysts have speculated that the pricing strategy of the PS3 can be due to Sony’s stock price fall during its last quarter earning.

PlayStation 3 System Revealed: The New Generation of Interactive Entertainment


The birth of the seventh generation of video game consoles marks the changes that would be made on the gaming industry. The basic system configuration of PlayStation 3 has four robust features. It holds a memory of twenty gigabytes, which could be upgraded. A Blu-ray drive is also included in the basic edition. With a Blu-ray drive and disc as its major media format, you will not find it difficult to store digital media. It can save data six times more than the current generations of digital video discs (DVDs). In addition, a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) port is also available with the basic system configuration of PlayStation 3. 

On the other hand, the premium version of PlayStation 3 comes with an internal sixty gigabytes of hard drive, multiple flash memory card readers, and wireless Internet connectivity. It also features controllers connected via Bluetooth, HDMI port, and Blu-ray drive. 

For those who have been attached with the previous versions of PlayStation, Sony promised that PS3 is compatible with them. PlayStation 3 can support all media formats of the previous PlayStation game consoles. Plus, PS3 has slots for the memory stick duo, SD, and that for compact flash memory. 

PlayStation 3 has distinctive specs. The game console features a cell processor, which runs 3.2GHz for an excellent overall performance. It also sports immense multimedia features namely, digital photo, digital audio and digital video. Sonny propagated the panoramic video feature for the current version of PlayStation. Thus, expect that you will enjoy the refined audio-video digital technology incorporated in PlayStation 3. 

The game interface of PlayStation 3 has the ability to save various user profiles, explore images, play music files of varying media format, and watch movies saved from the game console’s hard drive or removable memory. It is also compatible with a USB mouse and keyboard and has the capability of multitasking—that is, you can listen to your favorite music tracks while at the same time looking at saved images or browsing the Internet. In addition, the cross media bar of PS3 supports different file formats.
